What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in human lactation. There is a rigorous set of training that accompanies this credential, which begins with a background and training in a separate healthcare profession (in Meredith's case, midwife!). To receive the certification, an IBCLC receives 90+ hours of lactation-specific training, over 1000 hours of clinical practice, and must pass an internationally administered certification examination. To maintain the credential, IBCLCs complete 75+ hours of continuing education and sit for re-examinations every few years. They offer professional, evidence-based care and lactation-based health care and education for families, regardless of their feeding journeys!
